Sedation Dentistry: Is It the Right Choice for You?

by | May 29, 2017 | Blog

Do you have a fear of dental procedures to an extent that you would rather endure the toothache? Have you ever felt extreme anxiety at the thought of visiting the dentist? If so, you have the option of sedation dentistry, which will considerably diminish any pain or discomfort.

What You Need To Know About Sedation Dentistry

Before you consider sedation dentistry, know that there is no one kind of sedation technique in dental procedures.

There are different levels of sedation and different sedation techniques that apply to each one:

  • Mild Sedation: The lowest level of sedation, this is administered to patients using Nitrous Oxide (or “laughing gas”). It is intended to relax and relieve a patient from discomfort. Almost all certified dentists are permitted to perform mild sedation.

  • Moderate Sedation:It is usually performed orally – a mild form of Valium is given to the patient an hour or so ahead of the procedure.  Although the patient is awake for the course of the procedure, they are usually unable to recall much about it afterwards.

  • Deep Sedation: This form of sedation can be administered by either a higher strength oral medication, or a mild IV that works fast through the vein. The patient is semi-conscious during the procedure; they can simply be shaken awake afterwards.

  • High Sedation (General Anesthesia):This is the highest form of sedation, given only to the patients going under highly invasive dental procedures or surgeries. This is what most people would refer to as “sleep dentistry”, as the patient is fully unconscious and wakes up only after the effects of anesthesia have worn off.

People Applicable For Sedation Dentistry

There are some particular factors due to which individuals may need sedation dentistry:

  • Pharyngeal reflex– also known as “gag reflex”, resulting from dental tools probing the inside the mouth

  • Sensitive teeth or gums– sedation can be administered to avoid swelling or pain

  • Anxiety– sedation can be given to relax the patient and prevent unnecessary motion

  • Major procedure– extensive or invasive procedures require a specific level of sedation according to method.

  • Too young – children in need of dental procedures are often quite fearful of it. Nitrous Oxide, which is quite safest for young patients, is the usual sedation technique for them.
